Education
When we talk about water quality in Kansas City, most people think of our great tasting, high-quality tap water. With more than 125 years of experience in the water industry, KC Water has set a high standard for drinking water that is safe and aesthetically pleasing. But what about the water after it leaves your tap or before it gets there? Kansas City gets most of its drinking water from the Missouri River, either directly or from wells located in the river’s floodplain. The water that feeds the Missouri River starts as stormwater and then travels through our urban watersheds. Some stormwater soaks into the ground, but when stormwater runs off of paved surfaces, it picks up pollutants such as oil, direct, lawn fertilizers, and pet waste.
KC Water recognizes that education is a great way to spread the message of good water quality and raise awareness about the role we all play in reducing the pollution found in stormwater runoff.
If you are a teacher, non-formal educator, or civic group looking for classroom style education, our available K-12 programs can be found under Teacher Resources. We provide educators to teach at minimum, the first day of our programs. Or, if you would prefer, we can train you!
If you want to make a difference in your community, our stewardship opportunities can be found under Community Outreach. We will provide supplies and a location (if requested) for your river cleanup or storm drain marking event if you provide the volunteers.
All of our programs are provided FREE to schools, residents, and businesses that are located within the city limits of Kansas City. If you have questions or would like to schedule an educational program listed on this site, please call 816.513.0582 or email us at water.education@kcmo.org.
