(Kansas City, Mo.) – Kansas City Water Services recently outlined infrastructure priorities and Fiscal Year 2015 projects that comprise the Department’s five-year Capital Improvements Program to address the challenges of aging water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure in Kansas City. The program represents a $1 billion investment over the next five years for projects which are designed to improve water quality, increase system reliability, meet regulatory requirements, and promote community development.
“The Capital Improvements Program is a strategic and data-driven approach to proactively address the growing needs of our customers, and the challenges of our aging infrastructure,” said Terry Leeds, Water Services Director. “These projects will enhance the quality and reliability of the water services we provide for our customers.”
Fiscal Year 2015 Project Highlights include:
- The Water Main Replacement Program; a data-driven and strategic approach to proactively replace critical water mains throughout Kansas City, before they result in unexpected water service interruptions for customers. In Fiscal Year 2015, the Program will replace more than 20 miles of water main in areas that are statistically proven to be likely to fail.
- The Sewer Main Rehabilitation Program; a systematic approach to proactively rehabilitate critical sewer mains throughout Kansas City. Project improvements are designed to rehabilitate broken or aging sewer infrastructure to like-new conditions using non-invasive technologies which are estimated to preserve pipes for up to 100 additional years of sewer service.
- The Overflow Control Program; a city-wide approach to improving water quality by reducing sewer overflows. Project improvements will meet regulatory requirements for public health and safety through the use of green and gray infrastructure improvements.
“Water Services’ Capital Improvements Program represents Kansas City’s largest infrastructure investment,” said Mayor Pro Tem Cindy Circo. “Our commitment to invest more than $1 billion over the next five years will create over 18,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region, some of which will support smaller, local businesses and contractors in Kansas City. This investment will begin to bring our infrastructure into the 21st century.”
The Fiscal Year 2015 Project Rollout is the second annual project rollout for Kansas City Water Services. Completed accomplishments and highlights from the Fiscal Year 2014 Project Rollout include more than 85 projects, totaling more than $175 million invested in Kansas City’s water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure.
