(Kansas City, Mo.) – KC Water is looking for some good ideas to educate the public and get them thinking about water quality, stormwater runoff, and protecting infrastructure.
Overview
The Overflow Control Program (OCP) is a commitment by KC Water to reduce overflows from the combined sewer system and prevent overflows in the separate sewer system. Reducing and preventing overflows from the sewer system creates a cleaner, healthier environment for our community and improves the quality of water that is returned to area waterways.
KC Water created the Water Quality Small Grant Program to help fund projects and activities related to water quality protection, improvement, and education within the city limits of Kansas City, Missouri. The Grant Program is implemented through OCP funds set aside for water quality public education and outreach.
Grant Program Goals
The goal of the grant program is to improve water quality in our streams, lakes, and rivers through a reduction in the amount of stormwater, and the contaminants it can carry, entering the combined and separate stormwater systems. A reduction in the amount of stormwater entering the combined sewer system will reduce overflows and lower the cost to pump and treat wastewater. Projects or activities should involve:
- Public education on the impacts stormwater quality has on the environment.
- The impacts of stormwater runoff on creeks, streams, rivers and lakes.
- The importance of protecting infrastructure, local waterways and associated natural resources.
- Ways to reduce the impact on stormwater runoff on water quality.
Funding for green infrastructure projects will only be considered if the project has a significant public education and participation component.
